Baptism Preparation
"Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water and in the word." Catechism-7272
Baptism
Holy Baptism is the first and fundamental sacrament of Christian life, the gateway to all other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ and the Church, to share in her mission:
Infant Baptism
(For children up to five years of age)
Note: For children 5 years and older and Adult Baptism, please refer to The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Registration Form.
Child’s Qualifications:
Your child may be up to five-years-old and not baptized previously.
Parent’s Qualifications:
At least one parent must be a baptized Roman Catholic.
Godparent’s Qualifications:
A child may have a minimum of one, and no more than two, godparents. There may be one godfather and one godmother, or two godfathers, or two godmothers. You may desire to have additional "witnesses", but only the parents’ and two godparents' names will appear on your child's baptism certificate. The godparent(s) must be over 16 years of age, baptized Roman Catholic and have received their First Communion and Confirmation. They must commit to serve as lifetime spiritual mentors to their godchild, nurturing his/her Catholic faith and practice through their own regular attendance at Mass and active participation in parish life. Being a godparent is truly a ministry in the Church, and not simply an honor.
Baptism Preparation Class
The Church takes great care and concern in the preparation of parents and godparents for this Sacrament of Baptism. Classes are designed so participants gain a deep understanding of what the Church expects of them regarding both their commitment to the Church and to the spiritual life of the child.
Baptism classes are held on the 4th Saturday of the month from 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Classes are in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.
Baptism Celebrations
Infant Baptisms are celebrated in the Cathedral
- 1st Sunday of the month at 3:30 pm in Vietnamese
- 2nd Sunday of the month at 3:30 pm in English
- 3rd Saturday of the month at 9:30 am in Spanish
The Church requires parents and godparents to attend preparation classes so that they are well-prepared for this first sacramental encounter and celebration with their child. To sign up for Baptism class and Baptisms please fill out an application at least one month before the date of your child baptism. Please refer to the Baptism Form for details.
